In the event of other board position vacancies, those positions will also be chosen by the membership during the AGM.
Board nominees must be a current member of council from an MNL member municipality. Board members serve two-year terms in a volunteer capacity. Compensation is provided for travel, accommodations, and meals when conducting MNL business.
How to Nominate a Person for the MNL Board of Directors
The nomination process is open to members of council in MNL member municipalities.
The nomination period for 2025 is open from September 11, 2025 until October 22, 2025.
MNL has transitioned to an electronic signature process, whereby filling out and submitting the form serves the same function as a handwritten signature. MNL may follow-up and confirm the details of each form by contacting the municipality and contacts indicated on the nomination form.

About the Board of Directors
The MNL Board of Directors is structured as a governance board, meaning the board members are responsible for setting the strategic direction and policies of the organization, but are not involved in day-to-day operations. The Board meets quarterly. Additional obligations include attending the annual MNL conference and symposium, committee meetings, regional meetings, and meetings with representatives from other levels of government. There are also opportunities to participate in FCM events as an MNL board member.
Additionally, the President takes on the role of spokesperson, and is expected to be available for media interviews. The President is the only board member authorized to speak on behalf of MNL, although certain exceptions to this rule may apply.
The Vice President, along with the President, serve on the executive committee and are in regular contact with the MNL CEO.
The Urban Municipalities Director represents the 23 urban member municipalities of MNL. This person is also the chair of the Urban Municipalities Committee, and is expected to attend all committee meetings in addition to regular board meetings.
The Urban Municipalities Committee represents the interests of those municipalities with a population over 3,000. Issues are raised and discussed at quarterly meetings and recommendations for action are presented to the Board of Directors. The UMC are also called upon by the Board from time to time to review specific issues and bring forward recommendations for action.
The Small Towns Director represents all municipalities with populations fewer than 3,000. This person serves as the chair of the Small Towns Advisory Committee (STAC), which meets quarterly. Issues are raised and discussed at quarterly meetings and recommendations for action are presented to the Board of Directors. The STAC are also called upon by the Board from time to time to review specific issues and bring forward recommendations for action. Additionally, the Small Towns director chairs small towns member roundtable sessions.
Regional Directors represent the interests of their respective region – Avalon, Eastern, Central, Northern, Western, Labrador – and are responsible for attending MNL board meetings, chairing regional meetings, attending MNL events, and answering questions from members in their region or directing members to the appropriate MNL staff person.
