Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador supports rate mitigation efforts

February 11, 2020

St. John’s, NL – Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) supports provincial-federal efforts to reach hydroelectric rate mitigation in the province.

MNL president Sheila Fitzgerald welcomes yesterday’s announcement of the proposed restructuring of the Lower Churchill Project financing model and other rate mitigation measures.

MNL members, especially those on the Island, are concerned about the rising costs of electricity generation and transmission because of its impact on residents, businesses, and the sector itself.

“Our members run large-scale facilities in their communities. Any increases to electricity rates place additional pressure on their already strained operational budgets. It also puts pressure on businesses and our residents, many of whom live on fixed incomes,” President Fitzgerald said.

MNL is soliciting feedback from its members on the announcement.
