Call for Applications: Board of Directors Positions (Finance, Legal, Human Resources)
Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) is seeking dedicated volunteers with professional backgrounds in finance, legal, and human resources to fill three new positions on its Board of Directors. This is a unique opportunity to contribute your expertise and help shape the future of municipal governance in Newfoundland and Labrador.
About Us:
Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) is an incorporated not-for-profit organization that represents the interests of municipal governments in Newfoundland and Labrador, advocating for municipal autonomy, providing programs and services, and promoting sustainable community development.
Positions Available:
- Board Member – Finance
- Board Member – Legal
- Board Member – Human Resources
Commitment:
- These are volunteer positions.
- Each position has a term length of one year with the opportunity for re-election at each Annual General Meeting.
- Attendance at regular board meetings (frequency: quarterly) and participation in additional committees (quarterly).
- Attendance at MNL Annual Symposium (May) and Conference (October or November)
Location:
- Meetings may be held virtually or in person across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Responsibilities:
Finance:
- Provide financial oversight and ensure transparency and accountability in financial practices.
- Review and approve budgets, financial statements, and reports.
- Assist in developing financial policies that support MNL’s strategic objectives.
- Monitor financial risks and ensure the long-term financial sustainability of MNL.
Legal:
- Offer legal advice to support governance and compliance.
- Provide guidance on legal matters, including contracts and agreements.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
- Contribute to the development and review of governance policies from a legal perspective.
Human Resources:
- Advise on HR policies and practices to support organizational goals.
- Provide guidance on staff recruitment, development, and retention.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations.
- Contribute to the development of HR strategies that align with MNL’s mission.
Qualifications:
- Finance: CPA designation or equivalent experience in financial management.
- Legal: Law degree and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Human Resources: Certification in human resources (e.g., CHRP) or extensive experience in HR management.
- Demonstrated experience in the respective field.
- Strong communication and analytical skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and contribute to strategic planning.
- Experience with or extensive knowledge of non-profit governance.

Selection Process:
- A sub-committee of the Board of Directors will review applications.
- If only one qualified candidate is nominated for a position, they will be acclaimed.
- If multiple qualified candidates are nominated for a position, the sub-committee will assess the applications based on an evaluation metric and will put forward a slate to the MNL Membership for approval.
- If no qualified candidates are nominated, the position will remain vacant until the next meeting of the Members.
- Selected candidates will be presented to the membership for approval at the Annual General Meeting on November 7-9, 2024.
