Charting the Course to a Sustainable Future
For Immediate Release
Nov. 10, 2024
Gander – The 2024 MNL Conference, Trade Show and AGM has come to an end. It was a fabulous three days of connecting with municipal colleagues as we collectively work toward charting the course to a sustainable future.
Municipal leadership is a demanding role for all, but especially for women and gender-diverse individuals. Their inspiring work was recognized by the Leadership Awards for Women and Gender-Diverse Individuals during the Networking Breakfast for Women and Gender-Diverse Individuals.
Inspiration Awards were presented to Councillor Amy Coady, Grand Falls-Windsor; Councillor Linda Penney, Arnold’s Cove; and Councillor Debbie Hanlon, St. John’s. Achievement Awards were presented to Deputy Mayor Charlotte Gauthier, Gillams; and Councillor Chelsea Lane, Mount Pearl.
Setting the tone for the conference, keynote speaker Shaun Majumder brought to the stage an inspiring and touching story about rural sustainability and economic development through his ‘OME project in Burlington.
During the AGM, members appointed three professional board of director members in the areas of law (Jonathan Dale, Stewart McKelvey), finance (Michele Peach, CA/CPA, Retired CAO, City of Mount Pearl), and human resources (Alex Gibson, Pennecon). These new positions, approved at the 2023 AGM, will strengthen the governance of the organization.
The following regional board members were elected to a two-year term: Labrador Director Belinda Adams; Northern Director Dale Colbourne, Western Director Roger Barrett; Central Director Percy Farwell; Eastern Director Keith Keating; and Avalon Director Tina Neary.
Resolutions voted on by members at the AGM are a core driver of MNL’s advocacy work. This year, resolutions brought forward addressed wastewater monitoring; review of the Assessment Act; reform of the Job Creation Partnership; increasing funding for volunteer firefighter training; equitable distribution of recreation investment across the province; cell phone coverage; and reversal of the decision on northern cod stocks.
MNL thanks its partners and event sponsors who helped to make this event possible.
“This has been a fabulous three days of professional development and networking. I am so proud of the work MNL does, and of the work that our members do to build vibrant, sustainable communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.” – Amy Coady, MNL President
