St. John’s, NL – Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) Board of Directors congratulates Dr. Andrew Furey has he embarks on his new role as the 14th Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.

MNL President Sheila Fitzgerald says she is looking forward to working with the new Premier and his cabinet on addressing some of the key challenges facing municipalities in the province. Fitzgerald would also like to express her sincere gratitude to outgoing premier, Dwight Ball, for his commitment to the sector and his work for the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“It has been a difficult year for municipalities. COVID-19 amplifies weaknesses in the municipal system, especially municipal fiscal instability. Our members have shown tremendous leadership throughout the pandemic despite all the challenges they faced. Now is the time to look toward solutions and we look forward to a seat at the table to discuss them,” said President Fitzgerald.

Over the last decade, MNL has been advocating for municipal fiscal reform, regionalization and for greater support for municipal infrastructure, especially drinking water and wastewater. A renewed collaborative effort is needed with the new government on these files.
