St. John’s, NL – Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador congratulates the Honourable Krista Lynn Howell on her appointment as Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and Registrar General in the new provincial cabinet.
Howell began her political career in municipal government six years ago with the Town of St. Anthony and in 2019 became the first woman to hold the title of Mayor.
The MNL Board of Directors is looking forward to working with Minister Howell, Premier Furey and cabinet on addressing key challenges facing municipalities throughout the province. MNL also extends sincere gratitude to Honourable Derek Bennett for his commitment to the sector and wishes him all the best in his new role as Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly.
Over the last decade, MNL has been advocating for municipal fiscal reform, regionalization and greater support for municipal infrastructure, especially drinking water and wastewater. We have also been working closely with departmental staff throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that our municipalities have the information and the resources that they need to lead.
“We have several opportunities to address the challenges in the sector, and we’ve just scratched the surface in terms of making sustainable changes. I’m looking forward to working with the new Minister on finding solutions.” Amy Coady-Davis, Interim Chair of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador.
