Municipal leaders attend MNL’s 67th AGM in the City of Corner Brook

October 31, 2017

President Karen Oldford will chair the 67th Annual General Meeting of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador in Corner Brook this weekend. More than 600 people will participate in the annual convention and trade show that will take place from November 2-4 at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.

Agenda items on this year’s conference program include a summary of the Premier’s Forum on Local Government, held at the Greenwood Inn and Suites on Wednesday, November 1, the day before the MNL Conference. MNL is offering pre-conference sessions targeted to new councillors which will give them an overview of municipal legislation, their role as a municipal councillor and how MNL supports them and their municipalities. Conference co-chairs Mayor Roger Barrett of Reidville, and Mayor Dale Colbourne of St. Lunaire-Griquet will kick off the conference on Thursday evening’s opening ceremonies sponsored by Newfoundland Power and welcome by President and CEO Jocelyn Perry. And it’s a real honour to welcome Keynote Speaker Dr. Katherine Loflin, commonly known as the “City Doctor”. Katherine is an internationally award-winning placemaking consultant, speaker, and instructor in cities around the world and her strong message of “Placemaking” and why we choose to live where we do is positively engaging.

MNL is very excited to broadcast live from the MNL Annual Conference and Trade Show on 100.1 FM radio and internet radio webcast this week in the City of Corner Brook. We want to bring our event to municipal councillors and staff who cannot make it to the annual conference as well as reach out to residents and give them a peek inside the world of local government. Our satellite radio show will be set up in the Corner Brook Civic Centre from November 2nd to 4th. Feel free to drop by the studio lobby for an on-air chat about local government, promote an upcoming festival in your community or drop off a CD showcasing local talent! MNL is delighted to partner once again with www.ryakuga.ca and with your help and participation, we can take community and membership engagement to the next level!

Winners of the Tidy Towns Photo Challenge will be announced on Friday, November 3rd during an awards luncheon. During this time, MNL in conjunction with partner associations including, but not limited to; the Conservation Corp, Heritage Newfoundland and Labrador, and Landscaping Newfoundland and Labrador will give an update on their efforts to reboot the program and make it more beneficial and accessible to all member communities.

Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, Honourable Eddie Joyce will formally address delegates during the AGM on the morning of November 4th . Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) President Jenny Gerbasi will also bring greetings during the AGM. Premier Dwight Ball will address delegates during the Appreciation Banquet on Saturday evening. The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment will also honour long-serving municipal leaders at the appreciation banquet on Saturday evening.

Elections will take place on Saturday afternoon for the positions of Avalon and Small Towns directors. President Tony Keats (Dover), Vice-President Sheila Fitzgerald (Roddickton-Bide Arm) and UMC Director Robert Anstey (Gander), were uncontested in their bid for positions on the MNL Board.

A full convention agenda can be found on the MNL website or downloaded on the guidebook app by searching MNL AGM 2017. Media are invited to attend all sessions. Please contact Gail Woodfine upon your arrival for a media kit and access pass.
