St. John’s, NL – Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador is welcoming municipal delegates, sponsors, presenters and observers to its sold out annual Municipal Symposium, happening May 4 to 6 in Gander.
Over 200 municipal councillors and staff, representing 100 municipalities, will participate in person and virtually in 27 sessions covering topics on fire and emergency services, housing, climate change, regional approaches, healthcare in communities, municipal leadership and welcoming newcomers. The symposium theme, “Framing our Future”, speaks to the need for municipalities to be empowered and enabled in decision-making through partnership, knowledge and the proper resources for their future in this province.
Thursday’s opening plenary will feature author and folklorist, Dale Jarvis, who will speak on living heritage in our communities. Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister Krista Lynn Howell will address delegates at the Friday luncheon. Following her address, MNL President Amy Coady, Professional Municipal Administrators Vice-President Myrna Goosney, and Minister Krista Lynn Howell will proclaim May 8 to 12 Municipal Awareness Week.
“The MNL annual symposium is such an important gathering for our members. It is a time for us to learn together, to discuss and to collectively decide how we want to proceed heading into our annual general meeting. Framing our future is an appropriate theme. We are at a turning point. Change is needed and we need to be partners in that change with a clear seat at the table.” Amy Coady, MNL President
