A new program looking to get more women involved in municipal politics is coming to the province.

The Toward Parity in Municipal Politics program is looking for local initiatives that strengthen opportunities and reduce barriers for women to fully participate in municipal politics. $5,000 grants are available to help push programs.

Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador is advocating to get more women involved and at the table.

President Tony Keats says they currently have a number of initiatives underway. He says last year they started an MNL Women’s Caucus focused on how they can engage more women to take leadership roles within the municipal sector. They also have a women’s Facebook group.

Keats says currently, gender equity on municipal councils is good in some areas, and not others.

He says it’s an uphill battle sometimes, and a lot has to do with making sure councils are open and accessible.
