Sector Celebrates Municipal Awareness Day

May 17, 2021
For Immediate Release

St. John’s, NL – Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) is partnering with the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, and the Professional Municipal Administrators (PMA) to proclaim today, May 17, as Municipal Awareness Day.

More than seventeen hundred municipal councillors and hundreds of dedicated staff work hard to provide services, programs and governance to 275 municipalities across our province. With the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 and 2021 have been particularly challenging. Municipal councils and staff continue to show tremendous leadership in their efforts to keep their communities safe and informed.

Municipal Awareness Day aims to give residents an inside look at the world of local government and to engage young people, who will become the next generation of community leaders, municipal administrators and taxpayers.

Due to COVID restrictions, celebrations are scaled back again this year. We encourage residents to reach out to your local council and staff to recognize the work that they do.

“Recognizing the work of our municipal councils and staff is so important today, and every day. The work that they do is invaluable and should be celebrated. We encourage people who are enthusiastic and committed to change in their communities to consider running in the 2021 municipal election.” Amy Coady-Davis, MNL Interim Chair

“Municipal Administrative staff serve their communities and work hand-in-hand with elected officials and contribute greatly to the success of municipal government. On Municipal Awareness Day, we welcome residents of the province to celebrate municipal government and the role elected officials, staff and community volunteers play to ensure communities thrive and residents prosper.” Brian Hudson, PMA President.

“Municipal councils and staff across our province work hard to provide representation, programs and services for residents in our communities. The work they do every day has a direct impact on each of us. I commend all those who put themselves forward to serve their communities in this capacity. I encourage everyone to consider putting their name forward for election this fall. It is truly a rewarding experience.”  Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs
