March 6, 2020
St. John’s, NL – In advance of International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) is recognizing the importance of women in municipal leadership in the province.
“Given our close focus and strong position on empowering women to get involved, this is a really important day to acknowledge the efforts of women in our sector and in the province,” said Sheila Fitzgerald, MNL President.
Fitzgerald is the 3rd female president of the organization and Mayor of Roddickton-Bide Arm on the province’s Great Northern Peninsula. Four of the other board directors are women, including St. Lunaire-Griquet Mayor Dale Colbourne (Northern); Grand Falls-Windsor Councillor Amy Coady-Davis (Central); Torbay Deputy Mayor Trina Appleby (Avalon) and St. John’s Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary (St. John’s).
“We have a strong representation of women on our board,” said Fitzgerald. “We are proud of the work that women are doing in our sector and encourage more women to put their names forward in the 2021 municipal election.”
MNL held its first annual Women’s Leadership Summit in November 2019.
