International Women's Day 2026

Ahead of International Women's Day on March 8, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador put out a call to members asking for nominations to celebrate women in the municipal sector. The submissions received are presented below.

International Women's Day (March 8) has been celebrated each year since 1911. This globally celebrated day recognizes the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

Mayor, St. Anthony


Michelle Tucker, Mayor of the Town of St. Anthony, is serving her first term in office, having previously served a term as a town councillor. Professionally, she is the Assistant Principal of the local school, balancing a commitment to education with active community leadership. Throughout her life, Michelle has dedicated countless hours to volunteer work, holding roles such as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer in various organizations, always driven by a deep desire to help others. Known for giving generously of herself, she takes pride in making a difference in the lives of those around her. Outside of work and community service, she cherishes her beautiful family—husband and two daughters—and enjoys outdoor activities like skiing and snowmobiling. Her free time is often spent supporting her children at sports events, tournaments, and extracurricular activities, embodying both leadership and family devotion.

Linda been a councillor for 22 years, a deputy mayor for 4 years and now serves as mayor. She is a committed community person!

Linda was born in the Codroy Valley and has been a resident and educator in Corner Brook for 42 years. She graduated from Memorial University with a Primary Education degree and later went on to complete a Masters in Inclusive Education and a Masters in Literacy. Throughout the years she was active with the NLTA as a branch president and served on the NLTA board of trustees for Johnson’s Insurance. She was on the organizing committee for the National Special Olympics Winter games held in Corner Brook in 2016. Linda is currently on the board of directors with Humber Valley Community Employment Corporation supporting employment for people with intellectual disabilities. Linda is currently serving her fifth term, was elected mayor in the recent election, enjoys living in beautiful Corner Brook, and loves working with the residents.

Mayor Lynn Way stands as the first female mayor of Flowers Cove and has quickly become known for her steady, hands‑on leadership. She approaches every task-large or small with the same commitment and determination and she is consistently present to support staff and community members alike. Mayor Way is dedicated to keeping residents informed, encouraging participation and fostering growth throughout the town. She receives the same remuneration as all council members and continues to balance her mayor duties with full‑time work, demonstrating her strong work ethic and deep commitment to public service.

Sheralyn Rumbolt is currently serving her second term on Council. She is committed to continuous growth, participating in any available training that strengthens her ability to provide effective and informed leadership for the community. She is always willing to volunteer her time to support local events and initiatives taking place in the town, demonstrating her genuine dedication and hands-on approach to service. As staff, we are very fortunate to have her as our leader. She provides ongoing support, guidance, and encouragement, fostering a positive and collaborative working environment for everyone.

She sees the greater good both in people and in society and works hard to ensure that we can advance as well as be responsible and respectful to our local environment. She is incredibly intelligent and passionate about our world and how we can best integrate and not impact it.

Charlotte is recognized as Newfoundland and Labrador's first openly transgender municipal mayor, championing inclusive leadership, civic engagement, and community collaboration. Her work emphasizes sustainable local governance, representation, and strengthening connections between residents and their elected officials. A respected advocate for diversity and equity, Mayor Gauthier continues to advance positive change and resilience within the Gillams community.

Councillor Kay Smith is currently serving her third term on the Town of Placentia Council and has proudly served as Chair of Finance since first being elected. She retired from the Royal Bank after an impressive 52-year career, concluding her time there as a Manager. Not ready to step away from public service, Kay successfully ran for Council and continues to dedicate herself to serving the community. In addition to her career in banking and public service, Kay also worked in a flower shop, where she expressed her artistic talents through beautiful floral arrangements and painting local historic scenes. Outside of her work, she is an avid gardener and enjoys spending time in the garden with her husband. Kay is a proud mother of five and a devoted grandmother to eight. She resides in Placentia with her husband, Harry, of 56 years.

Chelsea Lane is an exceptional leader, educator, and community advocate. At just 30 years old, she serves as a dedicated City Councillor and the City’s Community Safety lead, representing Mount Pearl on the Library Board and the Northeast Avalon Joint Council. A full-time special education teacher, Chelsea brings compassion and expertise to her work with students and families. She holds three university degrees, completed one during her first term while welcoming two of her three young children, and is currently pursuing her master’s degree. She is a member of the Mount Pearl Kinette Club and a recipient of the Municipalities NL Women in Leadership Award.

She also has recently become a member of MNL’s Women and Gender Equity Committee.

Nicole is the Deputy Mayor and a City Councillor for the City of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, first elected in 2021 with strong community support. She brings more than two decades of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector, including roles as Executive Director of Women in Resource Development and the NL Sexual Assault Crisis & Prevention Centre, and as a Special Advisor to the Premier. A lifelong Mount Pearl resident, Nicole champions accessibility, inclusion, sustainability, and community-first governance. Her work focuses on listening to residents and turning ideas into municipal action that benefits all citizens.

Mayor Canning is the first female mayor for the Town of Wabush. Gertie served on two previous councils as a councillor and assumed the role of mayor in October 2025. She loves the Town of Wabush and works tirelessly for the town and its residents. Gertie believes it is important that as leaders the council and management must be transparent and accountable for all decisions made and encourages her councillors to keep this in mind. Gertie is supportive of her council and the town employees and believes that collaboration and teamwork are key to moving forward any issues that arise. Mayor Gertie Canning is an excellent leadership candidate.

Prior to joining Council, Councillor Bruce spent many years volunteering in her community through her work with school councils, breakfast programs, the MacMorran Community Centre and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Councillor Bruce is the current Lead for Community Services and the Seniors Advisory Committee. Her work with the Seniors Advisory Committee ensures that seniors have a strong voice and advocate in the Council Chambers. Councillor Jill Bruce is a dedicated and strong municipal leader, and a true ambassador for the City of St. John’s.

She has been and still is a very active volunteer in our town serving on Come Home Year, Cod Festival, Firettes and Recreation committees to name a few. She currently is a long standing member of the Heritage Committee and is a member of the Affordable Housing Board. She is very active in her community and you can be sure to see her at any events being held by the town or other groups. She is retired from working but her volunteering continues and our town is lucky to have her. Her compassion and willingness to help our community succeed and grow is much appreciated.

She brings her expertise to several key council committees, including Corporate Services, Community Services, and Public Works and Development. She served as Central Director and Finance Chair of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador prior to being elected President.

Additionally, her contributions to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities as the 3rd Vice-President, former Atlantic Caucus Chair and current Vice-Chair of the Rural Forum highlight her influence and advocacy on a broader scale. Her active participation in the community is also notable through her leadership of the Exploits Joint Council. She volunteers at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish and serves on the Harmsworth Public Library Board.
