Recruiting healthcare professionals is challenging. Keeping them is communities is even harder.
Communities across Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada are competing for the same healthcare talent while facing ongoing healthcare workforce shortages. The reality is that recruitment is only the first step. Without the right supports in place, even the most successful recruitment efforts can struggle to deliver long-term results.
Research and experience show that jobs alone are not enough. Municipalities that successfully attract and retain healthcare professionals are taking a broader community approach, combining employment opportunities with housing, social connections, family supports, and strong local leadership. Retaining a healthcare professional often means helping an entire family build a life and sense of belonging.
Building on the introduction of Healthcare Infusion at the MNL Symposium last May, this session will explore what is working, while looking at best practices from across the province and around the country, success stories, and practical strategies that can be adapted to communities of all sizes.
Attendees will leave with proven ideas, tools, and examples that demonstrate how municipalities can play a leadership role in creating welcoming communities that encourage healthcare professionals to stay, thrive, and become long-term contributors to local healthcare services and economic growth.
If your municipality is looking for ways to strengthen healthcare recruitment, improve retention, and build a more resilient community, this session will provide practical actions and real-world solutions you can begin applying immediately. Together, we’ll explore how communities can move beyond recruitment and create the conditions that help healthcare professionals choose to make your municipality their home.
