Ahead of the 2026 Provincial Budget, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) urges the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to commit to funding its Throne Speech promises to municipalities.
Municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador face many long-standing infrastructure and funding issues, including years-long boil water advisories; inadequate wastewater systems and a lack of resources to fund appropriate solutions; fire departments that rely on community fundraising to provide essential public safety services; a lack of resources to train municipal staff; and a lack of adequate cellular phone service in rural municipalities.
All decisions impacting municipalities must have municipal input, MNL reminds the Provincial Government. This includes the planning of municipal infrastructure funding programs and how those programs will be funded.
As the organization representing Newfoundland and Labrador’s 269 municipalities and five Inuit Community Governments, we continue to advocate for meaningful investments and policy solutions that address these ongoing issues and support strong, sustainable communities.
“MNL looks forward to working with the Provincial Government to create an equitable funding model for municipalities to provide clean drinking water, clean oceans, and safe communities for residents across the province.” – Amy Coady, MNL President
