
Abdul-Latif Alhassan (Abdul) works at the intersection of sustainability, public policy, and rural and regional economic development, focusing on translating research into practical, place-based solutions across Canada and West Africa. He holds a PhD in Transdisciplinary Sustainability and a Master’s in Environmental Policy from Memorial University of Newfoundland, a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Resource Development from the University of Ghana, and professional certifications such as a Level 5 Award in Professional Consulting from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), UK, and a Certificate in Civic Leadership and Engagement from Kansas State University.
Over the past decade, he has led initiatives in education, climate adaptation, food systems, civic engagement, and community development, securing and managing more than $1 million in funding. His work emphasizes knowledge mobilization, linking research with policy, and regional planning. Abdul also co-founded a non-profit organization (Civil Society and Institutional Foundation) in Northern Ghana and AbbaTek Group Inc., a clean and ocean technology startup in Newfoundland and Labrador. He enjoys nature & travel and contributes to governance and advisory roles in organizations focused on environmental stewardship, youth development, education, and inclusive policy. His work is grounded in a strong interest in how communities build resilience, mobilize local assets, and shape their own futures.
