Celebrating Municipal Awareness Week

For Immediate Release
May 5, 2025

This week, May 4-10, is Municipal Awareness Week. Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL), in partnership with Professional Municipal Administrators and the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, celebrates the work of municipal council and staff and their efforts to create vibrant, sustainable communities.

Municipal council and town staff are the people who build our communities. The decisions made by council and the work done in town halls often goes unseen, but the results are visible everywhere.

The ballfield, playground, dog park, community garden, firepits on the beach, trails, and festivals all exist because of your town council and staff. Of course, garbage collection, town roads – but not provincial roads – and snow clearing are also municipal responsibilities, as are drinking water, wastewater, transit, dealing with the effects of climate change, and more.

Many of these topics were on the agenda at last week’s Municipal Symposium, where MNL launched the new Make Your Mark campaign, in partnership with Equal Voice NL and the Provincial Government, to encourage involvement in this fall’s municipal elections.

“Municipalities provide the foundation for residents to build meaningful, rewarding lives in their communities. This week, as we celebrate the great municipal work being done across the province, MNL is encouraging municipalities to celebrate themselves and their community members in recognition of Municipal Awareness Week.” – Amy Coady, MNL President.
