Sherman Elliott

Northern Director Nominee
Mayor,
Raleigh

My name is Sherman Elliott, and I am the Mayor of Raleigh, Newfoundland and Labrador, the community where I was born and raised.

Growing up in a family of mechanics and fishermen, I developed a strong work ethic and a lifelong passion for fixing things. A welder by trade, I value practical problem-solving, collaboration, and finding solutions that work for people and communities. In 2000, I moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, where I built my career in the trades and met my wife, Ada. We have been married for 18 years and have raised our two children together. In 2021, I returned home to Raleigh, where I developed an interest in municipal government and the important role local leadership plays in supporting communities.

Over the past year, I have served as Mayor of Raleigh and as a member of the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board. These roles have provided me with firsthand experience in municipal and regional governance, as well as a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing small and rural communities. I believe effective municipal leadership starts with listening, working together, and finding practical solutions that serve residents.

I am seeking to serve as Director for Northern Newfoundland and Labrador on the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador Board because I believe small and rural communities deserve a strong voice in decisions that affect their future. I hope to contribute my practical experience, knowledge of municipal and regional governance, and commitment to representing the interests of communities throughout Northern Newfoundland and Labrador.

Message to MNL Members

Dear Members, I am pleased to share a little bit about my background and my interest in serving as Northern Director on the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador Board of Directors.

As Mayor of Raleigh and a member of the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board for the past year, I have gained valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing municipalities and regional communities. These experiences have strengthened my belief that smaller and rural communities need a strong voice and that their unique circumstances must be considered in discussions and decisions affecting municipalities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

My 25 years of experience in the trades, along with my current work as a welder with the Department of Highways and my seasonal work as a park ranger with ParksNL, have given me a practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving and public service. These experiences have also reinforced the importance of maintaining the infrastructure and resources that our communities depend on.

I believe effective municipal leadership is built on listening, collaboration, and a willingness to work toward practical solutions. I would welcome the opportunity to share my experiences, learn from fellow municipal leaders, and contribute to addressing the challenges facing municipalities across the province. I would be particularly committed to ensuring that the perspectives and needs of smaller and rural communities are heard and understood.

I would be honoured to serve on the Municipalities of Newfoundland and Labrador Board of Directors and contribute to the continued strength and success of municipalities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
