As a result of a COVID-19 outbreak and community spread in the Northeast Avalon region of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Chief Medical of Health initiated a special measures order on February 12, 2021 to put the province under a General Alert Level 5. The Special Measure Order (SMO) is here.

MNL recommends that you CLOSE your municipal venues (community centres, town halls, fire halls, etc…) to the public. This includes public council meetings. We recommend that you live stream public council meetings as a temporary measure. Options such as Facebook Live are available for free and widely accessible for the public.

If any municipality is not already set up for remote operations, council meetings, or conference calls and would like assistance please contact the MNL office and we will be happy to help. We can also assist if you need to purchase new or more personal protective equipment (PPE). All email inquiries should be sent to covid19@municipalnl.ca.

Given that not all municipalities have the same staff and/or resources for emergency response, we recommend the protocols outlined in the MNL Guidance Document to ensure that your communities remain safe and that you are communicating effectively with residents and within your council.

On Wednesday, February 17 at 11:00 AM NST (30 minutes earlier in parts of Labrador) MNL will hold another municipal COVID-19 check-in call with members. We will have representatives from the Department of Health and Community Services on the call to update our sector on the current situation. Upon registration for this call, you may submit questions for Public Health. Please check your inboxes for the Zoom registration link.
