Bruce King
Candidate for Small Towns Director
My name is Bruce King and I live in Holyrood with my wife and son Adam. I served over 40 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and retired in 2016. In 2017 I joined the federal public service and worked as the Safety and Environmental officer for the Canadian Forces Station in St. John’s for five years before retiring completely in 2021. For two and a half of those years I was the local union president, the union of National Defence Employees (UNDE). I joined the Holyrood town council in September of 2021 and was just re-elected to another term. I now have a chance to give back to my community and province. I have been a member of the Small Towns Advisory Committee now for several years and I enjoy it very much. This is the main reason I put my name forward to run for the Small Town Director position. I feel I have the knowledge and experience to do an excellent job if successful in being elected to this position.
Campaign Message
With my background of both Military Service, Federal Public Service and starting my second term on council, I feel I would bring a fresh perspective to the small town advisory committee. I am running to bring new energy, innovative ideas and a strong commitment to try and improve the lives of residents living in small communities here in N.L.
I have always been a very strong advocate for change when change was needed. I am committed to driving progress and implementing new opportunities for our communities to thrive and grow.
I believe in the potential of the small town advisory committee and the future of small town N.L. I am dedicated to bringing integrity, new opportunities, and a renewed sense of purpose to all our communities in the years to come.
I am confident that my combination of leadership, strategic thinking and a common sense approach to problems make me an excellent fit for the Small Town Director position.
Over the past four years I have been the chair of Holyrood’s public safety committee and the co-chair of our corporate services committee. Over the past four years I have advocated for improving cell service and was successful in getting a commitment from Bell Canada to build a new tower next year. I have advocated for improvements to Route 60 through Holyrood and we just received 2.4 kms of new pavement. I have advocated for a stronger police presence in the town to combat speeding, dirt bike and ATV use on our public roads. Public safety has always been a top priority and will continue to be in the months and years to come. I am a strong believer in living within your means and asking residents for the money you need and not the money you want. I was the only member of our council that voted against the mil rate increase in our 2023 budget. I firmly believe that every taxpayer dollar we take in should be spent properly and not a single cent wasted.
I respectfully ask for your vote of confidence for the position of Small Town Director.
