Campaign Message

Thank you all for considering me for the Small Towns Director position on the MNL Board.

I was born and raised in St. Anthony but have lived as far North as Nain throughout my career, which I feel gives me a unique perspective on small towns and the issues that they experience.

I have attended meetings of the Small Towns Advisory Committee and have been struck by the realization that the issues facing small towns are very unique but also common to each other.

Some of these common issues include:

  • Cost of living. With the rise of inflation we need to focus on what we can do to keep costs down for our residents. Some things are obviously out of our control but we can control our costs to residents, especially seniors, through efficient spending and the lowest tax rates possible.
  • Housing and Infrastructure. We all know how difficult it can be when working on big projects with engineering and contracting expenses; however, we must make efforts to build and secure affordable housing for our seniors. There is money that we can avail of through various agencies to assist our aging demographic.
  • Community Health and Safety. Our communities are not as safe as they once were. Policing is not as abundant as it once was as well. Detachments are having to share responsibilities for difficult communities and resources are spread thin. We need to band together and have open communication with the RCMP on how we can develop a solid plan to bring safety back to our communities.
  • Cell service is spotty at best and varies throughout the towns. This can have a major impact on emergency services and emergency planning. Minutes can mean life or death in these situations.
  • Shared Services. Sharing services and resources throughout communities can have a positive impact on everyone. We need to set goals and work on strategic planning around shared services.
  • Transparency, Accountability and Communication. We are accountable to our communities and the voters within. We need to share our success, progress and challenges with them in a clear and transparent manner.

I believe that we are stronger together and it is essential for us to create a solid plan to address issues, together.

I am a firm believer in action plans to work towards resolution of problems.  We must gather together, share common issues and create actionable items to deal with these issues. Meetings should be structured and documented, with clearly defined action items for follow up. Our united voice can be strong as one.

Please feel free to reach out to me at 709 899 1277 or carolynjanes80@gmail.com. Thank you for your consideration.
